The Glasgow City Chambers features a massive facade of polished granite and sandstone topped by a towering central spire. Queen Victoria opened this building in eighteen eighty-eight to demonstrate the city’s immense wealth during the height of the British Empire. Architect William Young filled the interior with intricate Italian marble and gold leaf. When the construction bill arrived, it reached over five hundred thousand pounds, a staggering sum that turned the project into a local political scandal during its final years.
