Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs in Glasgow spans the Molendinar Burn, connecting the main grounds of the Glasgow Necropolis to the entry gates near Glasgow Cathedral. It is a sandstone arch built in eighteen thirty-seven to provide a formal, private route for funeral processions. James Bryce designed the structure to keep mourners separate from the public traffic below. During the Victorian era, the bridge served as a final path for thousands of citizens walking to their graves in the hillside cemetery.
