Duke of Wellington

The equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington sits outside the Gallery of Modern Art, identifiable by the orange traffic cone perpetually perched on the Duke's head. While the statue commemorates the British victor at Waterloo, the cone has become a defiant symbol of Glasgow humor. City officials spent decades repeatedly removing the cone, only for locals to replace it by the next morning. Eventually, the council stopped the attempts, accepting that the cone is an inseparable part of the monument's identity.
