The Royal Exchange Square centers on a grand neoclassical building with a massive portico of Corinthian columns. Originally built as a private townhouse for tobacco merchant William Cunninghame in seventeen seventy-eight, it became the city's commercial heartbeat as the Royal Exchange in eighteen twenty-nine. Wealthy merchants once gathered here to trade goods, while today, the floor is home to the Gallery of Modern Art. A statue of the Duke of Wellington stands out front, famously crowned with a traffic cone.
