St Andrew's in the Square features a massive, pedimented portico held up by six giant Corinthian columns, a design that deliberately mimics the Roman temple style. It was completed in seventeen fifty-seven for the city's wealthy tobacco lords who wanted a church reflecting their status. When the minister, Doctor William Craig, refused to conduct his first service because he felt the pews were improperly arranged, the city elders simply threatened to withhold his salary until he stepped into the pulpit.
