Glasgow Cathedral

The dark, weathered sandstone of Glasgow Cathedral stands as a medieval anomaly in a city of Victorian red stone. This church remains the only primary medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to survive the Reformation of fifteen sixty mostly intact. While angry mobs tore down altars and smashed windows elsewhere in Scotland, the trade guilds of Glasgow gathered here with their tools and weapons to defend their sanctuary. They saved the structure while the bishops fled and the roof began to fall.
