Aliʻiōlani Hale

Aliʻiōlani Hale features a clock tower that rises above a row of high arched windows and a central courtyard. King Kamehameha the Fifth commissioned this building in eighteen seventy-one to serve as the seat of government for the Hawaiian Kingdom. Instead of its intended role as a palace, the structure became the home of the judiciary. During the overthrow of the monarchy in eighteen ninety-three, the balcony became a staging ground where local forces gathered while the queen remained in her palace nearby.
