Pioneer Plaza

Three bronze cowboys drive a herd of forty longhorn steers through the middle of the downtown concrete. Each animal weighs nearly one thousand pounds and stands larger than life, frozen in a trot that stretches across this plaza. Sculptor Robert Summers created these figures to recall the Shawnee Trail, the dusty path that funneled cattle north through Dallas in the nineteenth century. These steers cross a man-made creek bed, permanently mid-stride as they head toward a limestone ridge carved into the landscape.
