The Rice building fills an entire city block with its distinct, cream-colored masonry and ornate cornice. This site once held the Capitol of the Republic of Texas. In nineteen thirteen, Jesse Jones replaced the original hotel structure with this eighteen-story tower. During the nineteen twenty-eight Democratic National Convention, local organizers worked out of these rooms to secure Houston as the host city. Al Smith accepted the presidential nomination here, while reporters jammed the lobby to send dispatches across the country.
