Five gold-plated cupolas crown the Church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, rising above the intersection of Tsar Osvoboditel and Rakovski streets. Built in nineteen fourteen as the official church for the Russian embassy staff, it follows the traditional five-dome structure of seventeenth-century Moscow. During the communist era, the church remained open to the public, even as the state officially promoted atheism. Its walls contain murals painted in the style of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas the Second.
