A hand-painted elephant sign hangs above the entrance to the Elephant Bookstore on Shishman Street. Inside, the shelves hold a collection of rare English-language books, vintage maps, and posters that lean against the peeling, original walls of the nineteenth-century building. When the shop opened, the owner began by selling personal items from his own collection to locals who were hungry for Western literature. He kept the space cramped, keeping the focus on the discovery of books that were otherwise impossible to find.
