The Glenbow Museum building is a jagged, brutalist block of concrete that looms over the corner of Eighth Avenue and First Street Southeast. It exists because an oil tycoon named Eric Harvie decided in the nineteen sixties to donate his massive collection of minerals, art, and historical artifacts to the province of Alberta. Harvie made his fortune in the Leduc oil field, and he spent his later years filling warehouses with everything from Blackfoot beadwork to suits of armor.
