Harry Hays Building

The Harry Hays Building occupies an entire city block, defined by its massive, dark precast concrete exterior and sharp, geometric projections. Completed in nineteen eighty, this federal office complex replaced the old Canadian Pacific Railway station that once anchored the area. Inside, federal employees manage everything from passport applications to agricultural inspections. The building stands as a heavy, imposing example of brutalist architecture, purposefully designed to contrast with the glass towers rising throughout the rest of downtown Calgary.
