Calgary Public Library - Central

The Calgary Central Library wears a translucent, triple-glazed skin of hexagonal frit patterns that shift from opaque white to transparent glass as you move around the perimeter. It spans the busy Light Rail Transit tracks that once physically severed the downtown from the East Village. Architect Craig Dykers designed this building to act as an intentional bridge between these two neighborhoods. Inside, the massive timber-clad oculus mimics the shape of a traditional meeting space, echoing the way indigenous peoples gathered on these plains.
