The Woodland Cottage features a steep, gingerbread-trimmed gable roof that stands out against the flatter lines of the surrounding neighborhood. Built in eighteen sixty-three for a local merchant named John Helliwell, the cottage displays the ornate wooden flourishes popular during the colonial era of Victoria. Helliwell intended the house to be a private family home, but it eventually served as a boarding house for gold miners and sailors before being recognized as one of the oldest remaining wood-frame residences in the city.
