Royal Battery

The Royal Battery is a stone terrace wall featuring five black iron cannons facing the Saint Lawrence River. It occupies the site of a sixteen ninety-one defensive earthwork that successfully repelled a naval fleet led by Sir William Phips. When the British fleet approached the lower town, French defenders fired these guns, forcing the ships to retreat and securing the city. Today, those iron barrels remain positioned exactly where they saved Quebec during the Siege of Quebec in the seventeenth century.
