St. Louis Gate

The Saint Louis Gate is defined by two massive, twin stone towers crowned with pointed, copper-sheathed roofs. It serves as an entry point through the city walls of Old Quebec. In eighteen seventy-eight, Lord Dufferin, the Governor General of Canada, insisted on building this gate to maintain the medieval aesthetic of the city’s fortifications. He personally hired an architect to design it in a gothic revival style that harmonized with the historic stone ramparts, even though the original gates had been demolished years earlier.
