Dufferin Terrace

The long wooden platform of Dufferin Terrace hangs over the steep cliffs of Cape Diamond, anchored by massive iron trusses. It replaced the original Durham Terrace in eighteen seventy-eight, extending the walkway to offer a sweeping view of the Saint Lawrence River. Lord Dufferin, the Governor General who championed its construction, once famously insisted that the city needed a promenade worthy of its dramatic setting. He even helped pay for the initial design himself to ensure the project moved forward.
