The Citadelle of Québec

The Citadelle of Québec follows the shape of a star, defined by its thick, sloped stone walls that jut out over the cliffs above the Saint Lawrence River. British engineers designed this defensive work in the eighteen twenties to protect against an American invasion that never came. The garrison remains an active military installation, home to the Royal Twenty-Second Regiment. During the construction, laborers unearthed the remains of French colonial fortifications, which now lie buried deep beneath the modern parade ground.
