The Rue du Petit Champlain is a narrow stone-paved passage defined by its colorful, high-pitched roofs and wooden shutters. It clings to the base of the massive cliffs beneath the Citadelle, serving as one of the oldest commercial streets in North America. In eighteen eighty-five, after a massive landslide threatened to wipe out the neighborhood entirely, local merchants and residents formed a cooperative to rebuild and preserve the area. They painted the facades to match the original architecture, saving the street from demolition.
