Méduse

The Méduse complex occupies a sprawling brick factory building identifiable by the giant, painted neon jellyfish hovering above the Saint-Roch streetscape. This site houses ten separate artist-run organizations under one roof, a collection formed in the nineteen nineties after a massive fire gutted the former industrial warehouse. While city planners once targeted the structure for demolition, local collectives occupied the shell to demand a permanent home for contemporary art, theater, and film. The neon sculpture remains a marker of that successful standoff.
