Parvis de l'Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste dominates the neighborhood with its pair of towering, needle-like steeples that reach two hundred and ten feet into the air. This structure replaced an earlier wooden chapel destroyed in the great fire of eighteen eighty-one. Architect Joseph-Ferdinand Peachy designed this limestone edifice to mimic the scale of Parisian cathedrals. It remains one of the largest houses of worship in Quebec City, built to serve the massive population of laborers who lived in this district during the late nineteenth century.
