Parque Fernández Madrid

park garden

A bronze statue of a man in a frock coat stands in the center of the park, surrounded by colonial facades and tall palm trees. This is the memorial to Andrés de Santa Cruz y Calahumana, though locals know this plaza by the name of the patriot José Fernández Madrid. Fernández Madrid served as president of the United Provinces of New Granada during the nineteen tens, but he spent much of his life here in Cartagena writing poetry and practicing medicine before his exile.
