The street known as La Factoría in Cartagena takes its name from the old Royal Treasury building that once stood at the corner. Back in the seventeen hundreds, officials collected taxes in gold and silver here before the wealth was loaded onto Spanish galleons bound for Europe. The heavy iron bars still visible on some of the surrounding colonial windows were meant to keep those riches inside. Today, the street retains its narrow, shaded profile, trapped between thick stone walls that have seen centuries.
