The Tournelles Garden is defined by a dense, circular patch of trees that breaks the rigid grid of the surrounding Courbevoie neighborhood. This space occupies the former grounds of a royal residence, the Hotel des Tournelles, which held court for centuries before it was demolished. King Henri the Second died here after a jousting accident in fifteen fifty-nine, and his widow, Catherine de Medici, ordered the site abandoned shortly after. Today, the garden preserves that quiet, hollowed-out footprint within the modern city.
