Porte de la Gare de Paris

The Porte de la Gare sits at the southern edge of the thirteenth arrondissement, marking a historical passage point that once punctured the Thiers wall, the massive defensive fortification that circled Paris in the nineteenth century. While it takes its name from the surrounding Quartier de la Gare, this location served as a gritty industrial threshold for much of its existence, characterized by warehouses and open zones rather than residential life. Today, two massive, forty-meter-tall cement silos belonging to the company Calcia loom over the area. Since two thousand sixteen, these concrete giants have served as a canvas for a light installation by artist Laurent Grasso. At night, the silos glow with a shifting, multicolored display that reacts to real-time solar activity, creating an unexpected bridge between heavy industrial infrastructure and the invisible forces of the cosmos.
