The floor to ceiling wooden shelves at Kitab Khana hold books that lean against stone pillars from the nineteenth century. This space sits inside the Somaiya Bhavan, a building designed with deep, high arched doorways that keep the interior cool. Amrita Somaiya opened this bookstore in twenty eleven, wanting to create a quiet sanctuary in a busy city. She filled the shelves with titles from around the world and placed heavy tables where visitors can sit and read among the stacks.
