The Ranisar Talab sits as a deep, rock-cut reservoir surrounded by steep stone embankments, tucked into the shadow of the Mehrangarh Fort. Queen Jasmade Hadi, the wife of King Rao Maldeo, commissioned this tank in the middle of the sixteenth century to ensure a reliable water supply for the desert city. Legend claims the queen supervised the laborers herself, personally ensuring the basin was excavated deep enough to catch the precious monsoon rains that run off the surrounding rocky hillsides.
