The Surajpole gate rises as a sturdy stone archway, marking the eastern entrance to the walled city of Udaipur. Its name translates to the Sun Gate, honoring the sun deity worshipped by the Mewar dynasty. In the seventeenth century, Maharana Jagat Singh the second expanded the city walls to protect the growing population from raiders. Guards stationed here once monitored every person and caravan passing into the city, keeping a watchful eye on the trade routes connecting Udaipur to the rest of Rajasthan.
