Zenana Mahal

The Zenana Mahal rises above the rest of the City Palace complex with its distinct, enclosed balconies and screened stone windows. This wing served as the private residence for the royal women of the Mewar dynasty. Maharana Amar Singh the second commissioned the structure in the early eighteenth century to ensure the ladies could observe public life and court ceremonies through the intricate jali screens without ever being seen themselves. It was an entire world built behind stone curtains, guarded by specialized eunuch sentries.
