Toran Pol

Toran Pol stands as a massive, arched gateway built from local stone, marked by the intricate carvings that once defined the entrance to the walled city of Udaipur. Maharana Amar Singh the Second ordered its construction in the early eighteenth century to control access and protect the city. When the royal processions moved through this gate, the elephant carrying the king had to lower its head to clear the archway, a design detail intended to force a gesture of respect from the monarch.
