Chand Pole Gate

The Chand Pole Gate stands as a heavy, arched stone entryway carved directly into the western wall of Udaipur’s old city fortifications. It takes its name from the moon, or chand, because the structure aligns perfectly with the moonlight during specific phases. When the city walls were built in the seventeenth century, this gate served as the primary western entrance for traders and travelers arriving from the surrounding countryside. Its solid timber doors still hold the original iron spikes meant to deter charging elephants.
