Jagdish Temple

The Jagdish Temple rises above the Old City with a massive shikhara carved entirely from gray stone, covered in dense layers of dancing figures and elephants. Maharana Jagat Singh the First commissioned this structure in sixteen fifty-one to honor Lord Jagannath. When the masons finished, they placed a black stone image of the deity in the inner sanctum. A local priest once recorded that the temple survived the destruction of religious sites under Aurangzeb because the defenders hid the idol in a cave.
