The Alamgir Masjid rises above the Panchganga Ghat with three slender domes and a facade of weathered stone. Aurangzeb commissioned the mosque in the seventeenth century, building it atop the ruins of a pre-existing temple. He named the structure for his own title, Alamgir, which means conqueror of the world. The mosque remains a site of prayer today, its foundations embedded directly into the ancient masonry that supports the riverbank and the city high above the Ganges.
