Faro de Matamoros

The Faro de Matamoros is a concrete lighthouse tower standing on a steep hillside above the downtown streets. Built in the nineteen thirties, the tower served as an essential navigational aid for ships entering the bay, casting a beam of light far out across the water. A local lighthouse keeper lived at the base of the structure, responsible for keeping the oil lamps burning through the night. The light guided incoming vessels until nineteen sixty-nine, when the tower was finally decommissioned.
