The Subtle Stone-eater

The Subtle Stone-eater is a bronze and obsidian figure standing nearly eight feet tall along the Malecón. The sculpture depicts a thin, clown-like character balancing a polished, egg-shaped obsidian stone in his hand, preparing to swallow it. Artist Jonás Gutiérrez created the work in two thousand six, intending it to represent the negative emotions people consume and internalize as they navigate life. The piece has traveled across the city before settling into its current spot on the boardwalk.
