La Rotonda del Mar

monument

The sixteen bronze chairs standing along the Malecon are the work of sculptor Alejandro Colunga. Each seat features surreal, playful details like tentacles, clawed feet, or elongated backrests that seem to melt into the pavement. Colunga designed them in nineteen ninety-six to encourage interaction, inviting anyone passing by to sit down and occupy the art itself. While other statues on the promenade are meant to be viewed from a distance, these chairs function as a place for the city to rest.
