Isla Cuale

The Isla Cuale sits in the middle of the Cuale River, identifiable by the dense canopy of trees and winding brick walkways that separate the neighborhoods of downtown and Emiliano Zapata. In the nineteen twenties, this island was a simple strip of mud, but hurricane flooding in nineteen seventy-one forced the city to reshape the riverbanks. Designers filled in the riverbed, creating this pedestrian park to connect the town, leaving the space for artists and vendors beneath the shade of towering fig trees.
