Bredsgården is a narrow, timber-framed alleyway slicing through the Bryggen wharf in Bergen. Its dark, weather-beaten wooden walls lean toward each other, blocking out most of the sky. After the great fire of seventeen oh two, the merchants of the Hanseatic League rebuilt these structures to store dried cod and imported grain. The alley served as a crowded corridor for trade. A merchant once kept a pet bear in a small shed tucked inside this passage, tethered for the entertainment of sailors.
