Finnegården is the narrowest and tallest of the timber houses clinging to the wharf at Bryggen. Its dark, tarred logs lean noticeably away from the harbor, held together by wooden pegs rather than metal nails. These buildings survived a series of city-wide fires because the merchant guilds that owned them organized their own private fire brigades. In seventeen oh two, after a massive blaze leveled most of Bergen, the Hanseatic merchants rebuilt Finnegården using the same medieval layout that served their ancestors.
