Fredriksberg Fortress

Fredriksberg Fortress sits on the highest point of Nordnes, marked by a stone wall and cannons pointed toward the harbor. King Frederik the third ordered its construction in sixteen sixty-six to protect Bergen from the British fleet. During the second battle of Bergen in sixteen sixty-five, the Dutch fleet hid in the harbor, leading to a naval skirmish right below these cliffs. The fortress kept the city secure for centuries, though it eventually saw more use as a fire lookout than a battlefield.
