St Mary's Church | Bergen

St Mary's Church stands out with its two mismatched towers reaching toward the sky. It is the oldest building in Bergen, dating back to the twelfth century. While other wooden structures in the city burned away in repeated fires, this Romanesque stone church survived. For decades, it served as the parish church for the German merchants of the Hanseatic League who lived nearby. They filled the interior with elaborate woodcarvings, including a massive baroque pulpit they imported from the Netherlands in sixteen seventy-six.
