Stølesmauet

The white wooden houses of Stølesmauet crowd together along a steep, narrow cobblestone path that winds up the hillside. This lane preserves the dense urban structure of seventeenth-century Bergen, where buildings were packed tight to protect residents from the harsh coastal winds. In nineteen oh four, a citywide fire stopped just short of this row of homes, leaving them as rare survivors of their era. Today, the small gardens and low doorframes remain much as they appeared to the local merchants three centuries ago.
