Nykirken

Nykirken dominates its corner with a distinct, sharp spire and cream-colored walls that stand out against the grey Bergen sky. Built in sixteen twenty-one, the church served the growing population of the Nordnes peninsula as the city expanded. Fire destroyed the original wooden structure in seventeen fifty-six, but the townspeople rebuilt it in stone, completing the version here today. The building housed the first school for poor children in Bergen, established in seventeen thirty-eight to provide literacy and vocational training.
