Vågsallmenningen

Vågsallmenningen is a wide, stone-paved square in central Bergen that functions as a gap in the city’s dense timber architecture. After the great fire of seventeen oh two destroyed the area, city planners mandated this broad open space as a firebreak to stop future flames from jumping across the harbor district. It remains a stark, empty void between the stone buildings today. When the city burned again in nineteen sixteen, the fire stopped exactly at the edge of this square.
