Holbergsallmenningen

Holbergsallmenningen sits as a wide, rectangular opening between the tightly packed wooden houses of Bergen. It serves as a firebreak, a necessity born from the city's history of devastating blazes. This square takes its name from Ludvig Holberg, the eighteenth century playwright born in a house that once stood on this ground. In nineteen zero four, fire leveled the surrounding neighborhood, but the open space of the square stayed clear, sparing the buildings on the far side from the flames.
