Bryggens Museum

The Bryggens Museum stands over the ruins of the oldest settlement in Bergen, a cluster of foundations dating back to the twelfth century. A catastrophic fire in nineteen fifty-five destroyed the old wooden buildings on this site, exposing layers of earth that had been hidden for centuries. Archaeologists spent years sifting through the charred remains, recovering over fifty thousand artifacts. The museum now keeps these wooden remnants, domestic tools, and carved runic inscriptions inside a building designed to echo the scale of medieval structures.
