Sandviksbodene

Sandviksbodene consists of a dense row of weathered, wooden storehouses built directly on stilts over the water. These buildings served as the primary storage space for the Bergen stockfish trade for centuries. In seventeen fifty-six, a massive fire leveled the original structures, but the merchants rebuilt them immediately to keep the export business running. Today, the salt-crusted beams still bear the marks of heavy iron hooks once used to haul dried cod from boats directly into the dark, wooden rafters.
