Ytre Markeveien

other

The narrow, steep lane of Ytre Markeveien climbs the hillside of Nordnes with rows of white wooden houses pressed tight against the cobblestones. Most of these buildings date back to the early eighteenth century, rising from the ashes after a massive fire swept through Bergen in seventeen oh two. While the city below modernized, these residents kept their small, timber frames. One homeowner, a local merchant, famously built his cellar directly into the bedrock to keep his imported wine cool through the summer.
