Skutevikstorget serves as a quiet, stone-paved square opening directly onto the harbor water. It occupies the former site of a busy eighteenth-century wharf where local merchants offloaded timber and grain from incoming ships. During the late eighteen hundreds, the square became the primary center for Bergen’s salt fish trade, with barrels stacked high against the warehouse walls. The smell of brine often filled the air, and small boats moored against the stone quay to unload their daily catch for the nearby salting houses.
